POLOCROSSE: Well it’s done and dusted for another year.
The weekend of July 26-27 saw the Warren Polocrosse Club have 29 teams plus a swag of junior players from across the state converge upon the ‘Randwick of the west’ to celebrate Victor’s birthday and also entertain the spectators with some very exciting polocrosse.
With an influx of players for the weekend Warren managed to field four senior and one junior team playing from B grade open down to D grade, and with a spread like that they were always going to be in with a shot to bring home the silver ware in at least one grade.
First off, our juniors were again in scintillating form and didn’t lose a game in their Saturday matches to book themselves a berth in Sunday’s final against a highly-fancied Mendooran side, a match that went from one end of the field to the other with Warren finally running out winners.
Two Warren sides wound up in the D grade open competition due to being closely graded and evenly matched to play a round robin of two matches each day. Now with a couple of very handy ex players making a come back for the weekend Warren 4 was always going to be hard to beat and after some very entertaining games they managed to come out on top just ahead of Dunedoo and Warren 3 who performed extremely well considering it had a few first time players in the side, who no doubt will long remember their first carnival.
The Warren 2 side for the weekend played in the highly competitive C grade open round of matches and after playing three games on Saturday were wondering if they would have any horse power left for Sunday’s game. However they need not have worried as even the might of Marra 2 couldn’t stop this red and white juggernaut in its run to the bell, with Jeff ‘super coach’ Perry, or maybe I should say show pony, taking out the sportsperson award for this grade.
Now onto the big guns Warren 1. This side again showed why it is the benchmark team of the club and dare I say it, the Western Districts zone with wins over clubs such as Tumut, Cubaroo and then Tumut even combined a team with Orange to try and knock them off their perch but all to no avail, as this polished Warren side had the prize firmly in their grasp. After all was said and done and the dust had settled, for Warren it was winners are grinners, with Big Kev Dwyer taking out the sportsperson award.
Other winners on the weekend included Quambone, Mendooran, Tumut, Galloping Gully and Quirindi. Now special mention must go out to old golden tonsils Rolf Hartge who was the winner of an individual prize for the player that showed a lot of horsemanship and was selected by an A grade player. Personally I think it was for the best moustache on ground and he only edged out Ram Raid Waterford due to Rolf’s being a bit tidier and not as grey as Phil’s, but that’s just my opinion. Now all that is left to do is thank the unsung heroes of our carnival our generous sponsors. Well that’s all from me for now so until next time.
